PSA 8.5 is a valid card grade; PSA 9.5 is not part of PSA's card scale. PSA's half-grade explanation describes half points as recognition for exceptional quality within a grade, rather than a midpoint between grades.
This guide joins our Collecting Guides hub and supports our PSA label qualifier guide. Use it when a decimal on a photographed label makes you pause before comparing listings.
Official PSA sources checked November 2, 2026. PSA's half-grade explanation dates to 2008; its current grading standards still include illustrated 8.5 and 1.5 examples. The reused blueprint depicts generic holders and blank labels, not official PSA labels or store inventory.
Which half grades does PSA use?
The half-point values run from 1.5 through 8.5: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5. PSA's scale explanation explicitly excludes 9.5 and explains the separation of Poor and Fair at the bottom of the scale.
For a listing worksheet, preserve the exact number:
| Photographed grade | Record it as | Avoid this shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| PSA 6.5 | PSA 6.5 | Rounding to 7 |
| PSA 7.5 | PSA 7.5 | Combining it with all PSA 7 sales |
| PSA 8.5 | PSA 8.5 | Recording it as a PSA 9 candidate |
What does PSA 8.5 tell you about condition?
PSA's half-point explanation emphasizes centering and eye appeal while also considering corners and print quality. It says a whole-number result does not automatically mean a card is low-end for its grade.
PSA's current grading standards also describe grader judgment near centering boundaries. Our buying recommendation is to inspect the pictured card instead of trying to reverse-engineer a decimal from one border measurement.
Request full front-and-back photographs and close views of any visible issue. Use our raw-card condition checklist to organize observations about corners, edges, surface and centering. Keep those observations separate from the grade already on the label, and make a purchase decision you can accept at that grade.
Why is there no PSA 9.5?
In its published explanation, PSA says it did not add 9.5 because it already had Mint 9 and Gem Mint 10.
If a search result says "PSA 9.5," inspect the label photograph and verify the certification record before proceeding. Ask the seller to resolve any mismatch between the title, photograph and record. Do not build a price comparison around that title alone.
Check the certification and the complete label
Enter the number directly at PSA Cert Verification. Compare the returned identification and grade with the offered card. PSA warns that real certification numbers can be copied onto counterfeit inserts, so a database match alone does not authenticate an online offering. Our certification-checking guide expands that inspection.
PSA's half-grade explanation also says condition qualifiers do not accompany half-point increases. If the pictured label appears inconsistent with that description, seek clarification from PSA before buying.
Compare prices without assuming a half-grade premium
Use this research sequence:
- Record the year, set, subject, card number and exact version.
- Search completed sales for that card at the photographed PSA grade.
- Keep neighboring whole grades in separate comparison groups.
- Note sale dates, visible condition differences, shipping charges and missing information.
- If matching evidence is sparse, record that gap instead of averaging the grades above and below.
Our card-price research guide provides a broader comparison method. For product identification, use the Topps Chrome Update checklist guide before adding a grade to a target-card search.
Next step: choose one exact card and one acceptable grade, then narrow the disclosed searches below with its year, player and number. You can also visit /shop for the store and listing tools. Search matches do not verify a card's grade, availability or ownership by TheCardBoardReport.
