Choose PSA Reholder when an eligible card is already in a PSA holder and you want that holder replaced. Choose Crossover when a card graded by another company is being considered for a PSA holder. The distinction starts with the holder you have and the result you want, as described on PSA's Reholder and Crossover pages.
This guide joins our Collecting Guides hub and supports the next step after checking a PSA certification number. It focuses on cards that are already encapsulated.
Official PSA guidance checked October 29, 2026. Recheck the linked service pages and submission terms before ordering. The reused blueprint shows generic slabs and is not an official PSA holder diagram.
Start with the holder and your goal
Use this decision table with the official service descriptions linked below.
| Your situation | Service to investigate | What to establish first |
|---|---|---|
| A PSA holder has light cosmetic wear | Reholder | Whether the holder and card meet PSA's inspection requirements |
| Another company's graded card is to move into a PSA holder | Crossover | The lowest PSA grade you would accept |
| You think an existing PSA grade should be higher | Review | Whether a paid grade review fits your goal |
| The holder is fractured, open or suspicious | Contact PSA before selecting a service | How PSA wants the item submitted and evaluated |
That last row deserves attention before buying a damaged slab with plans to replace the case. Photograph the problem and ask PSA about the specific item.
What does PSA Reholder do?
PSA's Reholder page describes replacing the existing PSA holder with its latest holder and label. Generally, the grade, authentication result and certification number stay the same. Examples of suitable limited wear include superficial scratches, exterior plastic discoloration and faded labels.
Eligible reholder submissions generally are not regraded or reauthenticated. PSA still inspects the holder and label, checks their integrity and accuracy, and checks for an obvious grading error. The item must pass that inspection.
For a collector, the practical question is whether replacing a cosmetically worn holder matters enough to justify the current service and shipping costs. Do not budget for a higher grade from a routine holder replacement.
Can a damaged holder change the outcome?
Yes. Section 4(c) of PSA's submission terms identifies exceptions involving unsealing or tampering, a fracture over or near the card, changed card condition, or counterfeiting concerns. In those circumstances, PSA may examine the card outside its holder; the result can include a lower grade or return without a holder.
Treat light exterior wear and a fracture near the card as separate questions when contacting PSA. A listing that says a slab is an easy reholder does not settle its eligibility.
How does PSA Crossover work?
Under PSA's Crossover service, PSA evaluates a card graded by another company while it remains in its existing holder. If it meets or exceeds your specified minimum PSA grade, PSA removes it and encapsulates it in a PSA holder. If it falls short, it returns in the original holder.
The grading fee is charged either way. A card that does not cross still incurs the grading charge.
What minimum grade should you enter?
PSA requires a minimum grade on the crossover submission form. Its instructions say to enter 1 if you will accept any PSA numerical grade. Otherwise, choose the lowest PSA grade you are willing to accept, following the official minimum-grade instructions.
Make that decision before paying for a candidate card. Write down two outcomes: the card crosses at an acceptable grade, or it returns in its existing holder with the grading expense incurred. Our recommendation is to be comfortable keeping the card in its current holder if the second outcome occurs.
What if you want a higher grade on a PSA card?
That is the purpose of PSA Review, which evaluates PSA cards you believe merit a higher grade. PSA requires the card in its current PSA holder. Check that service separately rather than selecting Reholder for a grade reconsideration.
Check the order before packing
PSA's FAQ currently directs collectors to Classic Submission for Crossover, Review and Reholder. Check the chosen service's current pricing and available levels while preparing the order; PSA describes turnaround times as estimates, not guarantees.
Use this preparation checklist:
- Record the exact year, set, player, card number, version, grading company and label wording.
- Save clear photographs of both card faces, the label and every holder edge.
- Confirm the service, minimum grade where applicable, charges and shipping instructions in the completed order.
- Keep the card in the holder required for that service. Ask PSA how to pack an unusual or damaged slab.
Our PSA submission packing guide covers standard raw-card preparation. Use your encapsulated-card order's instructions for this workflow; do not remove a slab merely to follow the raw-card sleeve instructions.
Compare the card you can buy with the outcome you want
When researching a football card through our Stadium Club Football guide, establish the exact card identity before comparing any graded listings. Record the company and full grade for each candidate. Evaluate an already PSA-graded example separately from another company's card plus a possible crossover submission.
Use our card price research guide to organize matching sales. Do not base the purchase on an assumed future PSA grade or resale premium.
The disclosed eBay searches below compare football singles in PSA, SGC and BGS holders. Add the same year, player, card number and version to each search; they do not imply equivalent grades or verify any listing. Visit our shop for the linked store's current inventory.
Next step: choose one card, verify its identity and holder, then write down the service and acceptable outcome before submitting. Continue through the Collecting Guides hub for certification, condition and buying checks.
