An encased card is in a holder; that alone does not establish a condition grade. For a factory-encased example, Topps describes 2025-26 Pristine Basketball rookie autograph relics as available only encased. By comparison, PSA's trading-card process separates authentication, condition grading and encapsulation into three steps.
Before comparing prices, establish who put the card in its holder and what assessment the label actually records. This guide joins our collecting guides hub and expands the holder checks in our Pristine Basketball buying guide.
Official sources checked October 26, 2026. The reused original blueprint shows generic holders with blank labels, not an actual manufacturer seal or grading-company label.
What does factory-encased mean?
In this guide, factory-encased means a card presented in a holder as part of the manufacturer's product. Topps' Pristine product description, under Pristine Pieces Rookie Autograph Relics, provides a specific example. That encased description does not assign those cards a numerical condition grade.
Treat a listing's claim of an original holder or intact factory seal as something to examine. Ask for the complete front and back, the closure and any seal. If the seller cannot establish the holder's origin, record it as unknown rather than assuming that every rigid case came from the manufacturer.
Also keep the product name separate from condition language. A title containing Topps Pristine identifies a product family; use the photographed card and any grading record to assess the individual copy.
What makes a card graded?
PSA defines grading as assessing a card's quality and condition on its ten-point scale after authentication. Its process ends with a sealed holder displaying the grade and certification number.
For a listing advertised as graded, ask for a readable label and check the named company's own records. With PSA, enter the number yourself at Cert Verification. Match the returned identity and grade to the pictured card. Our PSA certification-check guide walks through the comparison.
PSA cautions that a database match does not authenticate the physical item in an online offer: counterfeit inserts can use genuine certification numbers. Check the photographs and seller as well as the lookup result.
Can a slab contain a card without a numerical grade?
Yes. PSA's grading standards describe certain hand-cut cards that can be encapsulated as Authentic only. Its no-grade definitions also describe circumstances in which an altered card can qualify for Authentic Altered encapsulation at the grader's discretion.
Read the exact designation instead of assuming every grading-company holder contains a numbered grade. Our PSA Authentic vs. Authentic Altered guide explains those labels in more detail.
| What you are evaluating | Evidence to request | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| Claimed factory-encased card | Manufacturer reference, full holder photos and visible seal or closure | Factory holder claimed or supported; numerical grade not established by the holder alone |
| Numerically graded card | Readable company label and matching certification record | Exact company, card grade and certification number |
| Authentication-only encapsulation | Full label wording and matching record | Exact designation, without supplying a missing grade |
| Card in a seller-supplied holder | Card photos and seller's description of the case | Ungraded unless separate grading evidence is provided |
Which photographs should you request?
Use the same questions for each offer:
- Identity: Can you read the year, set, card number and any serial stamp? Use our card identification guide to organize those details.
- Holder: Are the front, back, seams, closure and any seal visible? Ask about cracks, chips, scratches or evidence of opening.
- Card: Can you inspect the corners, edges and surface through the case? Request angled views when glare hides an area.
- Unclear marks: Does another angle help distinguish a scratch on the plastic from a mark on the card? If it remains unclear, leave it unresolved in your notes.
- Label: Is the complete assessment readable, and does it match the independent lookup where applicable?
The raw card condition guide supplies a fuller inspection order. Use it to request useful views; photographs are not a substitute for a grading company's examination.
How should you compare encased and graded listings?
Start with the exact same card: year, player, card number, autograph or relic family, parallel and serial numbering. Then separate factory-encased copies, numerically graded copies and authentication-only copies in your research notes. Do not enter an assumed future grade for a factory-encased card.
For each comparable sale, record the holder status or grading designation alongside the price, date and delivery costs. Our price research guide explains how to compare matching sales rather than relying on asking prices. If you are considering submission, work through the grading decision guide before committing to fees.
The two disclosed eBay searches below provide separate starting points for encased and PSA-graded Pristine Basketball singles. Refine each with your player and version, then verify every result. Next step: choose one card from the Pristine Basketball guide, record its holder and label evidence, and compare matching offers before deciding which copy fits your collection.
