How to Measure Card Thickness: PT Sizes for Card Holders

Measure trading card thickness with a printable gauge, convert PT to millimeters, and check top loader, magnetic holder and sleeve fit before buying.

Measure the card's edge with a card thickness gauge, then check the holder's depth, card dimensions and sleeve instructions. A label such as 130PT describes thickness capacity; it does not answer every fit question.

This guide fills in the holder-sizing step in our Collecting Guides hub. Use it alongside the long-term card storage guide when choosing protection for an individual card.

Manufacturer sources checked October 19, 2026. The reused editorial blueprint illustrates card edges and protective supplies; it is not a measuring scale or a specific manufacturer's holder.

What does PT mean for trading cards?

PT means points. In card-thickness measurements, 1 point equals 0.001 inch, or 0.0254 millimeter, according to BCW's holder-sizing instructions.

The following are calculated conversions, not recommendations for particular cards:

Thickness in points Inches Millimeters
35PT 0.035 0.889
55PT 0.055 1.397
75PT 0.075 1.905
100PT 0.100 2.540
130PT 0.130 3.302
180PT 0.180 4.572

To convert a millimeter measurement to points, divide by 0.0254. For example, 2.54 millimeters equals 100 points. BCW also prints the conversion relationship on its official gauge PDF.

How to use a printable card thickness gauge

BCW offers a card-sized gauge and prints related gauges on its top loader and magnetic-holder packaging. Its color coding corresponds to its own holder packaging.

For the downloadable version:

  1. Open the manufacturer's printable PDF.
  2. Print at 100% scale. Disable fit-to-page or other resizing, as BCW instructs.
  3. Compare the card's edge with the thickness bars. Inspect it without squeezing or bending it.
  4. Record the approximate point size, then read the specifications for the exact holder you are considering.

Use a physical gauge or a correctly printed sheet for the comparison. A resized image on a phone or monitor is not a reliable physical reference. If the fit remains uncertain, ask the holder manufacturer before inserting the card.

Check width and height separately from depth

A holder needs to match the card in three dimensions. Ultra PRO's 130PT Black Border ONE-TOUCH five-pack, for example, specifies 2.5-by-3.5-inch cards up to 130 points thick.

That is a specification for that model. It does not establish the capacity of another holder or make it suitable for a booklet, oversized card or sleeved card.

Before buying, record:

  • The card's width and height.
  • Its measured thickness.
  • The holder's stated card dimensions and depth capacity.
  • Whether the holder explicitly accommodates a sleeve.

Avoid assigning a holder size from the product name, autograph or relic label alone. Measure the actual card. If you are researching memorabilia, our game-used versus player-worn relic guide addresses the separate question of what the material's description means.

Choose the sleeve and holder together

BCW's thick-card sleeve guidance distinguishes its standard sleeves from its thick-card sleeves. It describes the standard version as accommodating cards from 10 to 100 points, and the thick version as working best from 100 to 240 points. Those are BCW's stated ranges for those supplies, rather than universal sleeve specifications.

For a top loader, choose a suitable soft sleeve first, then check that the sleeved card fits the holder without being forced. For a magnetic holder, read its sleeve instructions: BCW notes that ordinary magnetic holders generally do not accommodate sleeves and identifies special sleeve-compatible designs as an exception.

Do not assume a penny sleeve fits inside every magnetic holder. Choose a model that explicitly supports your intended setup.

Sleeve material thickness is a different measurement

A sleeve's film specification is not its card capacity. Ultra PRO's sleeve-material FAQ lists its penny sleeves as using 45-micron material on both the front and back.

That describes the plastic film. It does not mean the sleeve accepts a 45PT card. When comparing listings, distinguish film thickness, card thickness capacity, and card width and height.

Compare listings after measuring

Write a supply list with the holder model, point capacity, card dimensions, sleeve compatibility and pack quantity. Then compare listings that match those requirements. The searches below cover gauges, thick-card supplies and magnetic-holder sizes; narrow the results to your measurement before ordering.

For a current collecting project, continue with the 2026 Topps Midnight Football checklist guide, then return here to measure an individual card rather than assume a holder size for the release. Inspect its edges and corners with our raw card condition guide before storing it.

Measure one card, confirm the supply specifications, and then compare the relevant listings below. You can also browse our shop for current inventory; this guide does not imply that any particular holder or card is in stock.
