Before buying a sports-card single on eBay, check its Authenticity Guarantee badge and return terms. The current eBay trading-card program covers eligible raw and graded cards listed or sold at auction for $200 or more, excluding tax and shipping. Price is only one eligibility requirement.
This guide focuses on domestic U.S. purchases from U.S. sellers. Official sources checked October 11, 2026. Use it alongside our collecting guides hub when comparing individual cards. The hero is editorial artwork of generic holders, not an official authentication example.
Which trading-card listings qualify?
Under eBay's eligibility terms, a sports-card single must be in the Sports Trading Cards > Trading Card Singles category and carry the blue Authenticity Guarantee badge. Eligible graded cards must come from an accepted grader; check the current list on that page.
Boxes, packs, sets, lots, art cards and raw redemption cards are excluded. Local pickup and P.O. Box delivery do not qualify, and the program excludes U.S. territories and Armed Forces postal locations. This is not a complete list of exclusions: check the linked terms for the exact card and delivery address.
For a sealed-box preorder, use our eBay presale buying guide. Do not apply this single-card authentication process to a box purchase.
If a candidate listing lacks the badge, ask eBay about that listing before relying on authentication. Record the listing URL, badge, item price and delivery address in your buying notes.
What happens to raw and graded cards?
The seller sends a qualifying purchase to the authentication facility before it reaches you. eBay's process guide identifies PSA as the authenticator and describes different inspections:
| Card being purchased | Inspection described by eBay |
|---|---|
| Raw card | Authenticity and agreement with the listing, including corners, edges, surface and overall condition |
| Graded card | The sealed holder, signs of tampering, and the authenticity of its case and label |
The service does not grade a raw card or regrade an existing slab. After authentication, the item continues to the buyer. If authentication fails or the item does not match the listing, eBay describes a return to the seller and a buyer refund in the same process guide.
Our practical takeaway: choose the condition you are willing to buy before paying. Authentication does not turn a seller's raw-card grade estimate into an official grade. Use our raw-card condition guide to organize requests for better photographs.
Read final-sale terms before checkout
The Money Back Guarantee policy gives authenticated purchases specific coverage rules. A trading-card purchase is final sale when the seller does not offer returns or the stated return window has passed. Final-sale purchases are not covered simply because the buyer says the item does not match the listing.
Shipping damage and a seller failing to honor a stated return policy have separate coverage provisions. For transit damage, the trading-card terms require a return request within three calendar days of delivery, or within the seller's stated return window when returns are offered. Inspect the delivery promptly, photograph damage and follow the order's request instructions.
An eligible return goes back through the authentication facility for inspection under the Money Back Guarantee policy. Keep authentication materials intact: the program FAQ says a return can be denied if the item or condition differs, or the authentication sticker is removed or tampered with.
